Epitaph or epithet?

JOB

not writing

computer

rubbish friends

Just found the above sitting in the drafts folder of my Gmail account, written just under a year ago. This is either a peculiar attempt at three syllable tanka, an horrific summation of my life (bar the friends bit, who are all priceless), or both.

Either way, it’s depressing to know that much of what was apparently troubling me a year ago is still headlining at the chapel.

  1. Love this. Really, though, it could probably serve as the summary of many of our lives. Except of course the friends bit (she hurriedly adds, just as you did).

  2. Ah, the Gmsil drafts folder, where awful truths realised in the midst of working day tedium go to die.

I think I wrote this on Friday. These exact same words.

Well, apart from the friends bit, obviously.

  3. To paraphrase Sir Tom Baker, if my friends ever left me I’d be f***ed.

On top of my daily exercise of feeling even copper coins haemorrhage from my pocket with all the preamble of a Greek tragedy, my errant computer has today been behaving like a difficult child.

Early this morning I purged much of my drafts folder in a Night Of The Long Email Fragments. I found 3 unfinished poems, 12 To Do lists, 4 incomplete job applications, 7 novel/short story fragments and an inordinate use of the phrase ‘pissflaps to everything’.
